The urban theatre

The Urban Theatre questions: how can Architecture be less permanent and more responsive to the ever-changing needs of society and adopt to the phenomenon of digitalization?

Why is Architecture and the built environment still so permanent, in a time which is characterized by temporality? 

Especially in a time where certain types of urban spaces or buildings get more and more neglected due to their outdated functioning and changing demands of society. Since the emergence of the digital era and Internet Communication Technologies, changeability is becoming at least equally valuable as permanence. Virtual environments like social media and smart mobile devices have proven their value mostly throughout their high capacity of connectivity, accessibility and adaptability. The speed at which these virtual environments can change, respond and adapt to instant events or changing needs, illustrate a parallel of the current situation of our society. Trends and (societal) values change in a much shorter period of time and everything around us becomes ‘smart’ and more responsive. We as human beings have been extremely adaptive, in our way of life, to these changes brought to us by the digital era. So why not the built environment? Especially considering the way in which our physical built environment is strongly affecting the way we live, work and move. How we use space is influenced by how this space is physically designed. After all, the ability to adapt to the ever-changing times and society is also a form of sustainability and future-proofing. How can the design of a physical space adapt to this phenomenon? These are questions that triggered this graduation work and resulted in a design that elaborates through multiple scales on the theme of ‘adaptability’ of physical spatial settings. 

An urban device, as a system of systems and a hybrid space that mediates between the people, the physical urban fabric and digital environments.

Expandable over the deck square, doubling the roofed space and creating multiple interior-exterior possibilities in combination with the lowerable deck and openable facade. The roof is cladded with ETFE foil integrated with PV-cells, which supply the electric power engine and the industrial hoisting systems. All controlled via Artificial Intelligence.

Consisting out of multiple moveable platforms. Each individually adjustable in height, so that any given configuration is possible. So it can serve as a square, stairs, seats, terraces and other spatial settings in combination with the expandable deck and openable facades.

Openable facade

The front facade is designed with foldable glass-wall systems. As a result the size and arrangement of the main event space is adjustable and thus variable. Also an interesting coherence emerges between interior and exterior space.

And of course ultimate flexibility is provided by a thirty meters column-free span in the main stage.

Further flexibility and variability is given by the integration of smart systems, lighting, sound and industrial hoists, in both the base-building as in the second telescopic roof.

The telescopic roof is extendable over the deck on the inner courtyard-side, doubling the roofed event space and creating multiple-use possibilities.

The responsive deck is supported with a telescopic column system, which enables movement along a vertical axis. This makes a wide variety of configurations possible for different events and activities. Also the deck is the connecting element between the Urban Theatre, the existing building block and the elevated walkway.

Both the telescopic roof as the base building are equipped with installations like lowerable technical grids for lighting and sound. 

And also integrated industrial hoisting systems that are moveable along X- and Y-axises. This system can serve e.g. to hang decor items, for setting up the stage or for logistic purposes.

The smaller stage in the basement level is also adaptive to different use(r)s in terms of being a multi-purpose space with integrated telescopic theatre seatings which folds away when not needed.

The elevated walkway, extending to different hot-spots in the city centre of Rotterdam like CS or Lijnbaan, is also responsive in terms of adapting to different weather conditions. For example; when shading is needed the element folds out and because it is integrated with pv-cells it serves as a charging station at the same time.

But how does all this movability come together and for what use? These simple sketches, made somewhere along the design-process, are describing a possible scenario of how the Urban Theatre can change throughout the day. Responding to for example the weather, to different parts of the day or to different activities.
